Description
RARE Early UNION / Lacy SANDWICH Flint Glass Fiery Opalescent 9" ROMAN KEY PlatePresenting a rarity for your auction pleasure that I have been unable to locate the duplicate of in either my reference books or on the internet. This particular early flint ROMAN KEY pattern we most associate with
BOSTON & SANDWICH,
Portland Glass Co. & Union Glass Co.
According to both Metz & R.W. Lee, Sandwich made Roman Key in a plate form, described by Lee as "rare". No mention of colored examples.
We believe this example is Lacy Era in the milk white
opaque
/ f
iery opalescent coloration. You note the purple color splotches (from mold stuck colors) within the white glass batch, typical of early colored Lacy Era wares.
Displays a prominent shear mark to the base, suggesting the earliest C.1835 wares, but possibly C.1860.
Pressed upside over a plain male mold by a female plunger. This open reticulated edge is rare in flint plates. Under close loupe inspection, each openwork pierced loop bears the fainest mold mark. The
Greek / Roman Key patterning has background stippling, as shown.
From an estate collection of the earliest American Glass, compiled mostly from the 1950s through the 1980s, containing some Real Rarities!
Please do chime in if you have anything to offer regarding this unusual piece's origin!!!
Measures 1 3/8" tall X 9" wide.
This flint plate is heavy weighing 1 pound, 12 ounces.
When gently pinged with the finger, the glass rings as sonorously as the Sandwich Horn of Plenty compote on our shelf.
This old timer remains in generally excellent shape indeed.
With no chips, cracks, discolorations, patterning nicks to the showy undersides or other damages, an excellent example! Some straw marks
from early manufacture is all.
To be about 190 to 160 years old, about as well conditioned as you could hope for really.
Guaranteed early flint.
This unusual gorgeously colored old timer displays beautifully indeed!!
