    Description

Original antique large-format albumen photo of the body cast of a victim of the A.D. 79 eruption of Mt. Vesuvius from the Pompeii archaeological site, circa 1886, the image measuring approx. 9-5/8" x 7-3/8" on the original card mount measuring 17" x 14", identified in the negative as having been discovered in 1868, the reverse bearing a printed label, "Human Imprint, Pompeii." A bit of light soiling and slight edge wear to mount (the image completely unaffected; the faults easily matted or framed out), and subtle warping to board (easily flattened in mat and/or frame), otherwise near fine, attractive condition overall, the image free of any external blemishes, the exposure with rich, wide tonal range, the emulsion remaining smooth and free of crazing or degradation.
A striking image of one of the most intimate and immediate discoveries at the Pompeii excavation site, created and preserved by pouring wet plaster into the cavities left by bodies trapped beneath the ash during the eruption. The photo depicts such a figure outdoors on a wooden table in a rather tortured position, the arms upraised with clenched hands, one leg awkwardly bent outward at the knee, the original skull plainly visible.

IMPORTANT NEW NOTE ON SHIPPING--PLEASE READ.
I'm not a fan of fine print and disclaimers, but a number recent developments have contributed to likely delays in shipping:
    1) Recent changes at the USPS have resulted in longer shipping times, particularly to more distant destinations (i.e., the south, midwest, and west). Please take this into account. I generally ship using the least expensive class that's appropriate, but I will gladly make arrangements for expedited shipping upon request. If there are any issues with delays/tracking, please contact me immediately—I am happy to assist.
    2) Most sellers are now required to enroll in eBay's Managed Payments program. As part of this program,
eBay holds every buyer's payment for two business days before releasing it to the seller.
This means that if you pay late on a Thursday night, your payment will not clear until at least Tuesday. If you pay on a Monday morning, your payment will not clear until at least Wednesday. Again, please take this into account.
In case of any issues or problems, please contact me before opening a request or dispute.
As my long feedback record makes clear, I strive to provide accuracy in descriptions, great care in packaging and shipping, and excellent customer service.
Contacting me directly first to resolve questions or issues greatly speeds up the process and ensures greatest satisfaction.
